In 2024, Hunter faced challenges that led to his removal from public school and a referral to an out of district special education placement. However, long waitlists left him stuck at home with his mother for months. His school eventually referred him to Easterseals Youth Transitional Services (YTS), a turning point in his journey.
Through YTS, Hunter secured his first paid job, working two days a week as a floor associate at Dollar Tree with the support of a one-on-one Youth Support Specialist. Easterseals YTS program also connected him with critical community resources, granting him access to clinical services, food, and clothing. In addition, he enrolled in cooking classes and a grant-funded digital literacy course, which played a pivotal role in his development.
The digital literacy class empowered Hunter with essential email and internet skills, enabling him to communicate effectively with his Algebra instructor, the DMV, and his employer. The training also helped him navigate his computerized onboarding process and properly clock in and out at work.
“I was nervous in the beginning, but I was interested in learning and seeing how much I already knew,” Hunter shared. “It was cool and helpful to learn new things that will help me today and in the future.”
A key factor in Hunter’s success was his pairing with Duke, his Youth Support Specialist. Duke became a mentor and role model, offering the guidance Hunter had lacked before.
“I am proud to see how far he has come over the course of this year and very proud of myself, knowing the big part I’ve played daily in his growth to date. His future is certainly getting brighter every day,” said Duke, YTS Support Staff.
Since joining YTS, Hunter has thrived in his job at Dollar Tree—so much so that his manager has asked him to take on additional shifts. Beyond his employment success, he has fully reintegrated into his high school through the support of his in-school YTS staff and even made the honor roll, a testament to his resilience and hard work.
“Life feels different and way better since I started with YTS and Duke a year ago,” Hunter explained. “I am very happy about making the honor roll for the first time in my life. I am also very happy to have my first job and having Duke there to support me has been a huge help.”
Hunter’s journey showcases the transformative power of support, opportunity, and determination. Thanks to Easterseals Youth Transitional Services, he is now on a path toward a brighter future.
“I wouldn’t be where I am now without YTS and Duke,” said Hunter.
