Adult Day Manchester recently welcomed a vibrant and heartwarming visit from the Manchester Community Music School, in collaboration with Easterseals Early Childhood Centers of Excellence (ECCE). The morning was filled with laughter, rhythm, and intergenerational connection as music brought participants of all ages together in a shared experience of joy.
“The older adults are so eager on Monday mornings for their time together with the children and the engaging music,” said Sue Reynolds, Director of Adult Day Services. “For some, it is a highlight of their week. One of the participants asked me when the children were coming, as she loves to watch them dance and sing!”

“We’re so thankful for this opportunity to offer intergenerational music therapy. It fosters connection and comfort, said Jackie Pearce-Ward, Intern with Manchester Community Music School. “Older adults feel free to be playful in ways they might not otherwise, while children learn how to navigate social interactions. Clearly, it works; adults open up, express themselves, and feel seen.”
As soon as the music began, the room lit up with energy. Adult Day and ECCE participants joined in with smiles, movement, and spontaneous laughter. The power of music to uplift and unite was on full display, including a tearful moment when an Adult Day participant shared about his Dementia diagnosis and how Adult Day makes him feel less alone.
“There’s a huge shift in how we view dementia. The diagnosis often comes with a preconceived notion of what it looks like,” said Ms. Leah Joy, music therapist with Manchester Community Music School. “Music therapy helps participants regain a sense of agency; it allows them to laugh, play, and feel comfortable in their own space.”
This special morning was a beautiful reminder of how music can transcend age, ability, and background, creating moments of genuine connection and joy.
This partnership is made possible through a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts.
